Firstly thanks Mikelord ;-))

Unfortunately Brittany Ferries are total rip off merchants......I belong to Travel Club, it's something you pay to join in order to enjoy certain benefits.  It seems that I cannot use this discount as a Travel Club member because BF deem it two lots of discount.......total rubbish since I pay for the Travel Club offering.........I won't be rejoining at renewal time......

It is not unusual to disallow concurrent discounts, but I am a little concerned that as a BF Travel Club member, no concession is being made on this front.  However,  We were considering taking up this Travel Club membership this year, but are concerned that the discounts on offer are "up to" and no concrete information is given. Can you give us some idea of how much discount you have been receiving on the trip to Spain?

 Hi Xetog

The discounts vary depending on when you travel and they relate to the cost of the ferry only and do not include accommodation. Their chart shows:

UK - Spain (non promotional)
January to April & October to December
up to 30% - Stays of over 10 days
up to 25% - Stays of 6 to 10 days
up to 15% - Stays of up to 5 days
UK - Spain (non promotional)
May - September
up to 25% - Stays of over 10 days
up to 20% - Stays of 6 to 10 days
up to 15% - Stays of up to 5 days

in terms of hard cash, we've found it on average to be between £45 - £120 discount for the two of us.  On top of that you get a breakfast allowance of £7.50 per person each way.

They state that you also get:

Other Savings
Promotional Fares Up to 10% - reduction on promotional fares
Onboard Dining 10% reduction on all onboard dining, including à la carte restaurant, self-service and cafés. £15 minimum spend per transaction.
Breakfast Allowance* A breakfast allowance of £7.50 per person when booked in a cabin on overnight sailings. Allowance is redeemable against continental, traditional or formula express only*
Guest Discount up to 10% - on fares to France and Spain
Ferry inclusive holidays 5% saving on Brittany Ferries Holiday Packages*
Recommend a friend to book

Get your friends and family to book with us and we'll credit your account with £10 towards your future travel for each booking made, allocated when you renew your membership.** Maximum credit accruable £100 per annum.

however it seems the discounted fares available at www.brittanyferries.com/spain11 do not count for some reason despite their statement above....... ;-))

Thanks for that.  We usually go for about 60 days, twice a year off season, so could expect maximum discount.  I have just looked up the cost for our next trip in early March/April and it is £591, so 30% off this would be a real bonus and pay us back for the cost of the membership and then our second trip out in September would see a good return on the membership fee.

last September was the first time we tried Brittany ferries, previously we had tried P&O and driving down through France.  The BF ships were OK, but hardly luxurious (but far better than The Pride of Bilbao). Oddly enough we did not find them as stable and although generally good sailors we both found ourselves discomforted on occasion.  However, we love the drive down through Spain (except the bit around Madrid) to CB and it can be accomplished easily in a day, so we will probably give the Travel Club membership a try.

The comments are much appreciated.

 Hi Xetog

Be careful, the discount is not on the total cost and also certain sailing days attract a premium (I found this out when speaking the the Travel Club Team).  That said there are still some good discounts to be had.

Here's a couple of illustrations:

In the Top Cabins (which on Pont Aven include a private club and lots of luxury).  But do note the Luxury selected for one leg of the sailing on CF costs more that Commodore Class on Pont Aven for the other leg....that's another one to watch for ;-)):

utbound Sailing     Price
Vehicle and Passengers     130.20 GBP
Outside 4 berth Commodore cabin with ensuite facilities   1
      225.00 GBP
Allowance of £7.50 towards traditional, continental or formula express breakfast, to be spent in a single transaction at the food outlet of your choice   2 FREE

Return Sailing     Price
Vehicle and Passengers     219.75 GBP
Outside 2 berth de luxe cabin with double bed and ensuite facilities   1
      262.00 GBP
Allowance of £7.50 towards traditional, continental or formula express breakfast, to be spent in a single transaction at the food outlet of your choice   2 FREE

Total 836.95 GBP
Including non refundable deposit of
Which is due today
25.00 GBP
Payment is due on 2 Feb 2011 for the balance of 811.95 GBP
Saving applied to this booking -129.05 GBP

With a regular outside cabin and ensuite:

Outbound Sailing     Price
Vehicle and Passengers     130.20 GBP
Outside 2 berth cabin with ensuite facilities   1
      80.00 GBP
Allowance of £7.50 towards traditional, continental or formula express breakfast, to be spent in a single transaction at the food outlet of your choice   2 FREE

Return Sailing     Price
Vehicle and Passengers     219.75 GBP
Outside 2 berth cabin with ensuite facilities   1
      100.00 GBP
Allowance of £7.50 towards traditional, continental or formula express breakfast, to be spent in a single transaction at the food outlet of your choice   2 FREE

Total 529.95 GBP
Including non refundable deposit of
Which is due today
25.00 GBP
Payment is due on 2 Feb 2011 for the balance of 504.95 GBP
Saving applied to this booking -129.05 GBP

Good luck searching for the best deal (BTW if you do join you can call the Travel Club and they will search for the cheapest fares for you).

Finally my beef with BF is their blatant statement about the additional discount on promotional fares and them telling me I can't have it ;-))

I agree that it seems to contradict the travel club advert page however I don't want to cut off my nose.........

We intend to make 2 return trips and one single this year. We booked the first return in November and worked the whole year costs and savings at that point based on that fare and estimated for the others and decided the first year TC costs would be covered.

They then advised us not to join in November since we travel in December each year and by waiting we would get the full year. So we booked the Jan trip there and then and rang back this morning to join. They have applied the discount retrospectively and we will get £121 refund. In addition there will be 2 free breakfasts at £7.50 = £15 + 10% off evening meals which we do treat ourselves too say another £5. So on the first booking we will save £140ish at a  cost of £200.

Next two trips should save us more than the rest of the cost. Subsequent renewals cost £100 which we should save on a single trip.

Now we need to address the misleading advertsing with the local council consumer department here in UK.
Since we started this thread I thought I woul d let you know I have just received the latest newsletter from Brittany Ferries for July 2013 with a couple of interesting paragraphs.

“The summer season is almost upon us and, as our ports become busier, we suggest you allow a little more time for check in. We still have plenty of space, however, particularly on mid-week sailings so, if you are flexible, you can choose the one that suits your budget best now that each sailing is priced individually. It is also worth checking the offers pages on the website”.

“Winter schedules”

“The 2013/14 winter timetables will be available online to book from mid-August and will follow a similar pattern to those of last winter”.

Just a reminder that you can use my membership code to get up to 10% discount on Brittany Ferry crossings to Spain and France. With the flights to Spain going up all the time, try the ship and see some of Spain.

Here are details of how to use the code. Very easy but any problems send me a PM.

Happy Sailing to France or Spain and I get £10 off towards my next booking. So we both win! Don't worry it is perfectly correct and Brittany encourage the discount to get more bookings.

Details as follows to get up to 10% discount on your Ferry Bookings.

IF YOU BOOK ON LINE:

DROP DOWN MENU:

Are you a member of the travel club: YES
Property Travel Club Number: S91039
Lead Persons Name: (Your name)
The booking is for: a GUEST of the member.

IF YOU BOOK BY PHONE AND THEY ASK FOR MEMBERS NAME: PM me.

Happy sailing and if any problems PM me
Regards John.
Hi John and Kath,

,I like you, have made available my membership number with Brittany Ferries to allow fellow EOS members to get up to 10% discount on the sailings.

I was dismayed to get an e mail from Brittany Ferries yesterday saying that they have blocked my membership number, as I was allowing people to use it who I did not know.  I explained to them that the people who were using the discount were members of EOS and asked why it was necessary for me to know the people personally..  I also said I would have thought they would be grateful that people were using Brittany rather than other carriers because of the discount.   I also asked where in the rules did it say they had to be known to me personally.

There reply was to instruct me to remove the details from EOS and obviously my membership remains blocked.

If anyone has any comments on the high-handed way that Brittany are handling this, I would appreciate your comments.

In the meantime expect an e mail from them as I know they are trawling EOS in- boxes as they sent me links.  I wonder if this is legal?  talk about big brother.  Perhaps EOS have a view.

Regards

Joan

So whats all this about then?

The ferry company gives you membership with a number to gain a discount.

You give the membership number out to all and sundry so they can get a discount without joining the 'club',  so to speak.

And the ferry company is now to blame because you abused their generosity of the discount scheme....why?

You missed a para in the middle.

The discount is 30% for members however they are allowed ney encouraged to get their friends familly and "guests" to use it as well and they get 10% discount on fare only. So I have a couple of villas and 3 apartments lots of friends in our Urb and a big family who all come out at one time or another thats an awful lot of potential for others to use our card without advertising on EOS. In fact jdmrhs said no when I askedto join her thread.

Brittany also limit the amount of benefit you can get for friends to 14 so they are not open ended.

We just wanted to clarify this comment, jdmrhs very kindly sent us a copy of the links that were in the email so we could check if they were in fact from "in-boxes" or a public forum. They are in fact all from the public forum which is perfectly legal and available to everyone.

I used this discount code (thank you) for my wife and I car and dog to travel one way from Portsmouth to Santander on 2th February.2014.I initially got about £30 discount off my booking, with kennel booking and cabin overnight.

I then,at a later date decided to upgrade from a  2 berth to a 4 berth cabin which cost an extra £30,so in effect,I had it for the same price as 2 berth.

Having read the threads below,I have just priced a one way trip back to UK on same route, using the date 1st June 2014.

I requested a price for just driver with car and no cabin just a lounge seat.Without the discount code it was £179 with the discount code it was £171.

At least I could get a free breakfast?

I then priced same journey with LD Lines Santander to Poole. If I travelled on 1st June it would cost £111 if travelled on 8th June it was £176, not much difference on the later.

Just wanted to add this to the thread for comparison.

If it was my code you used thank you.

I have renewed until 31st March 2015 so you should be OK next year as well. My earlier post with the information and code was on 19/07/13 not as previously posted 19/08/13.

There is real competition now with LDLines running Poole - Santander, BF running Portsmouth - Santander/Bilbao, Plymouth - Santander and finally the new BF Economie service Portsmouth - Santander. We have booked next month on the 2 night crossing Portsmouth - Rosscoff - Santander. We looked at the other options and significant savings could be made on the LD Lines sailings but cheapest at that time was BF Economie. I am never keen to spend more than I need to but timing and accommodation on the crossing were paramount so Cap Finistaire it is in a De Luxe cabin for the first time.

John.

Yes, thanks from me too. We used the code in the summer and saved £30 or £40. Better than a kick in the teeth.
