Hi all,
I've just had a quote from Jets4Pets.com for transporting my cat from Gatwick airport to Malaga airport...£461!!! And that doesn't include transporting her from our home to Gatwick or overnight stays involved, etc.
Does anyone know of a cheaper way to fly pets to Spain from the UK? Transporting by sea/over land would take too long and would distress our cat (she is 14 years old). There is no way we will leave her behind but this seems outrageously expensive - or am I being naieve?

Costs
Unfortunately, due to airline charges and the logistics involved, it is not cheap. Unless you are lucky enough to be travelling first class, taking your pet(s) will, in general, cost more than your own airfare. Try not to let this put you off the whole idea - We do aim to give a competitive quotation to you based on the information supplied. Prices are dictated by the size of the transit kennel(s) used and these are in turn dictated by the size of your pet.

Have you checked if any airline will let you take your cat on board with you? I know a friend of mine used to take their small dog between Malaga and Palma regularly, in the cabin with them, so long as it was in a proper carrier. Maybe this was because it was a relatively short domestic flight - maybe it wouldn't be an option for you anyway. Just thought it may be worth mentioning. You could check with individual airlines what their policy is.

you know .. Roberto's correct. 
I remember now that a couple on our urb on the previous phase flew from Birmingham, I think it was, to Alicante, with their two cats in the hold, so were reunited when they came off the plane & I also remember thinking that the cost was acceptable.
Unfortunately, I'm not in contact with them & it was probably three years ago now. One cat was old like ours are too, the pair were very timid but they were fine. Sorry I cannot recall more. I'll get details next month though as I'll make a point of popping across the road to speak with them. I could email our President or ex President & ask if they could ask if Joyce & Brian are on the internet or failing that ask for details.

Hi Suzi. It is a big problem cost wise taking pets out of the UK more so by air , that price you had seemed very high for a moggy but the airlines/ transport know people are stuck with almost no choice , we have heard people paying £300 + for a dog from London to Spain , the other problem is not all airlines take pets so they almost charge what they like. Just for info if you are flying between countrys in Europe you can mostly take small cats/dogs in the cabin that makes more sense dont you think. Hope you find the best way soon. Regards Rosi n

Hi when we first moved to Spain..we moved our dogs with us in the car, it was a good journey and there were places to stay that were ok with the dogs and they just slept in our room. Unfortunatley last year one of our dogs died and the other was so sad on his own........ So I went back to the UK and bought a puppy !!!! 28days after he had had his Rabbies jab (only one required ) he flew from Manachester - Alicante on a Monach flight. He had to be at the airport 5hrs before he flew, a vet had to sign him as fit to fly prior to him being checked in, and he was then looked after by the couriers until his flight later that day. The cost of a PUPPY was £600. and that included his travel cage ( which we still have ). When he landed at Alicante we had something like 29/30 € to pay for his handeling costs ( he weighed 16 kg approx.) and that was it...We got the couriers from the internet, and they were all about the same cost, but if you wanted to know who we used i could look out the paper work and see ( if I've still got it on file.) Hope that helps.

Yes, thanks Janice, I found the board and wonder if it would be possible to move this thread there because, hopefully, some people might find the following information useful.
First of all I followed the links that you and Conrad sent me and received the following quotes for flying my cat from the UK to Malaga airport:
- Jets4 Pets £461
- Transfur Animals £436
- Animal Airlines £415
- Lady Haye £356
- Pet Exports £353
However, you and Roberto got me thinking - so I phoned GB Airlines Pet Line (affiliated to British Airways) 01293 579546 and spoke to a very helpful man called Pete. He suggested that my cat could fly as 'excess baggage' on any BA flight and I would only have to pay £4.65 per kilo (wieght of cat plus carrying box) plus £20 handling fee. So working on the basis that a carrier weighs about 5 kilos and my cat weighs 4 kilos = 9 x £4.65 = £41.85 + £20 handling fee = TOTAL of £61.85 (not forgetting the cost of an approved carrier - will let you know how much that costs later). Quite a difference in price to the quotes above!

The price difference from the "specialist" to "excess baggage" is ludicrous!
Wonder if Bagpuss goes via excess baggage on his hols he he he!!!
