How easy is it to change a car ownership when selling a car?

What documnets are needed, where is it done and how much does it cost?

Hi change ownership of a car is not straight forward as you have to go to the nearest Trafico office and pay money to them and to the Tax man also alot of running around pay someone to do it for you as is complicated and all forms are in Spanish. Set aside at least two dys or more as I said alot of paperwork good luck. Iceman

If you are the seller of the car, it costs you nothing!

The buyer is the one who pays for the transfer into their name

It doesn't have to be a 2 day mission either!

Just go to a Lawyer and they will do all the paperwork for you.

They charge aroun 300€

this is the same price as a garage would charge if you bought via them

I found buying a car and doing the transfer into my name a very smooth and speedy process.

Of course the buyer could do it themselves if they want to save a bit and spend 2 days sitting in traffico office!

I think as a seller you have to make sure it's done if you don't want to end up being chased for road tax and fines etc after you sold the car?

I bought a car 4 years ago and still have not got around to changing ownership or tax  office (car is registered in Madrid) etc - I keep meaning to do it .... but previous owner knows this and knows me so no problemo!

Go to any local gestoria and they do this for a pretty nominal fee and you can get buyer to pay you for the transfer etc

I would not use a lawyer as that means you might end up paying expensive fees for an administrative routine task etc

Yes Faro, I agree the seller has to ensure it's done, else they get any speeding fines etc.,

My seller came with me to the Lawyer, bringing her NIE number, so all was fine

She was my Sister in Law, but we wanted it done properly!!!

sounds like your sister in law does not trust you!!!

isn't it amazing how everything in Spain is always so complicated - you always need to go in person - can't even do the most simple of tasks over the telephone etc All I have been able to figure out the system is designed to create maximum employment!

Today the official in Fuengirola police station who stamps NIE numbers is sick and until he returns no NIE numbers will be issued - surely another member of staff could pick up the stamp? This story is the same in every public office up and down the coast ............. no team work and it's no my job!!!!

Oh she trusts me alright Faro, it's the Local Guardia we DONT trust!

They issue fines & tickets, for even starting you car........!!!!

As yes, Spain is full of Jobsworths, only the ones with the right hats on can do the job!

But then I wouldn't ask a butcher to pull one of my teeth out!

No comments please, this is only a joke!!!
