Ken has been authorised to get access to the roof and hopes to have the VIP Hotspot people on site at the beginning of the week.

I decided to to buy a USB Modem which plugs into the back of my laptop and gives me internet access via the mobile phone network (I am writing this in Don Juan). I bought it from Vodaphone for 79€. You can then buy MBs as you require them. 20€ buys 25MB, 40€ buys 200MB and 60€ buys 1GB. This seems ideal for those those want to check email etc when in Spain but don't want to pay a monthly subscription when they are not here. It is really easy to setup and all you need is your passport to buy the modem

I am one of those that is falling behind with technology. All I know about computers is how to plug them in, get on the internet, and check my emails. I have over 2000 to read, but don't have time to read them, so lying on the terrace reading them would be a good option. Please try to answer as many of my stupid questions as possible.

I would only be using it to check emails, bank accounts etc.

1) How long would 25MB, 200MB and 1GB last.

2) How would it work.

3) Would there be an expiry date that the MB's had to be used by.

4) Would the cost be expensive because it is mobile.

5) Is it by the minute.

6) Does it sound expensive to you.

7) Would there be problems with the connection seeing as there is no phone network in our area.

8) Why do you need a passport to buy the modem

9) Would it work out a lot cheaper just to go down to the local internet cafe. What sort of difference in price are we looking at.

I looked into this a couple of weeks ago. I found for my needs the pay as you go USB modem option way too expensive. It is fine if you want to send the odd email here & there and use it infrequently but not for much else. I can try and answer some questions but maybe David can add to it or correct it as he is actually using it. 1. According to Vodafone uk 3GB will do approximately 2000 emails or 100 web pages (for browsing). 2. You simply plug the USB modem into the USB slot on your computer it then sends signals via the mobile 3G network. 3. Not Sure 4. No there are no mobile costs you just pay for the usuage of internet ie 20 euros for 25MB or 40 euros for 200MB etc 5. No 6. Yes if you use it frequently or for more then just sending emails 7. As long as you get a Vodafone mobile phone signal then no. 8. This is spain 9. Most internet cafes are charging 1.50 euros per hour. Incidentally Orange do a similar USB modem package but no pay as you go option. They do have an option which costs 6 euros per month (on 18 month contract) and then you pay 2 euros each day you connect and the service is limited to 1GB usage per month after which you pay 4 cents per MB. But the modem is free. This to me is a better option then the Vodafone pay as you go.

I picked Vodafone because I knew their signal strength is good in Don Juan. I don´t know about Orange but I agree with RG that their deal is better value if you plan to be in Spain fairly regularily. I used 50MB last night (OK it was a novelty) but even so buying anything less than 1GB would be poor value. There was something about needing to top it up within 9 months but I didn´t understand exactly. You don´t pay by the minute - only for the MBs you use. The local internet cafe at 1€ per hour is hard to beat but it is not as convenient. The modem has a sim in it which you could use a a local pay as you go phone if you wanted. I didn´t ask why they needed to see my passport but my passport number was recorded on the sale agreement

 

The local internet cafe is actually 1.50€ per hour but it is is charged at 50c per 20 minutes so is good value of you are happy going down to the beach to check your e-mails
