Murcian Regional News, Minister in talks with Paramount Studios project team

The Minister of Culture, Pedro Cruz , and the President of the region, Ramon Luis Valcarcel, have returned from meetings in Dubai with the interesting news that feasibility studies are to take place into the construction of a massive theme park, on a level with Disneyland Paris here in Murcia..

Whilst it is too early to get overly excited, the new park could create 20,000 jobs and bring 3 million tourists a year more into this region, should the project go ahead.

The two have been in discussions with Michael Bartok, Executive vice president of the licencing division of Paramount Pictures and Ruwaad Holdings CEO Hayan Merchant who are said to favour the region because of it's climatic attractions, over and above other regions including Catalunia and Andalucia, both of which have been considered for the project.

A site is being sought in Spain to create the largest theme park in the country, of a size and sophistication to rival Disneyland Paris, together with film studios which will be the centre of Paramount filming in Europe.

Executives from Ruwaad, together with technical staff, are to travel to Murcia and carry out the technical and feasibility studies, and the regional executive will begin the drive to attract investors for the scheme.

At this stage several locations are under consideration for the construction of the site, but Murcia is considered to be ideal due to the location of the new Corvera Airport, recently completed motorway links, the new high speed rail lines which are currently under construction and the fact that the region is the warmest in Spain, with an average 300 days of sunshine a year.

The project investigation team are moving fast and will be in Murcia within the next few days, hoping to complete the initial assessments within a month, with all viability studies to be completed by the end of April.

Should this project go ahead it will certainly be a massive stimulus to the employment prospects within the region, although other theme parks already in place, such as the local Terra Mitica in Murcia and other major parks throughout Spain have failed to perform financially in line with projections made.

Cruz spoke tentatively about investments of  1.800 million euros being required, and the region itself will be required to cede land to the project and invest financially if it wishes to hook a big fish

This development will undoubtedly create interest in property in the Murcia region. It is likely that rental returns will increase dramatically for property owners on the already popular Polaris World golf resorts. The lure of an American style theme park, world-class golf courses and an average temperature of 21 degrees will bring visitors from all over Europe to the region

An architect we have worked with was at a business function over the weekend and sat with a delegation from Polaris. He was told that Paramount will be built on land SOLD (??) back to the government by Polaris near Condado de Alhama. Obviously still hearsay but from a source that may have some insider information. Fingers Crossed.

Where abouts is that I tried to google map it but got america!!!

I guess it cant be far from Roda as all polaris were within 45 min

If you make a triangle linking  Alhama, Mazarron and Fuente Alamo it would be near the top of the triangle. Its going to be approx 5 million square meters so when (IF) they start it should be quite easy to spot.

It is much easier to find on Mapquest Spain as the maps are more up to date.

Find Mazarron on the map and follow the RM 23 north. Condada de Alhama is marked on the map.

The easiest way to get there from Roda Golf is to drive to Roda village and turn left until you meet the road to Torre Pacheco. Just before Torre you follow the signs for the new RM 2 auotpista which you follow until you hit the RM 23 for Mazarron. the entrance to Condado is well signposted. The RM 2 does not yet appear on google maps!!!!

About a 35 minute drive. Huge piece of land.

It says 45 mins from San Javier but having driven to the Sierra Espuna I think it may be a touch more, only 20 mins from new airport though.

Having read lots of press, I would advise caution, Daily Mail article looks a little optimistic, mind you do we ever believe the Daily Mail and there is much better and informed information on the simplynetworking.es website

This is still a Paramount licence operation and investors will have to be found to build it, given the current problems both with theme parks in Spain and Dubai World it is still a long way off especially as the banks would appear to asking a not inconsiderable amount for the land, I believe the French virtually gave away the land for EuroDisney.

Fingers crossed though, may be able to take Grandson there in a few years.

I agree and lets hope it happens, but I wont believe it until its up and I can see it with my own eyes!!!

I don't believe it Hugh_man _ I read this on another blog yesterday and didn't believe it then  - surely he must be innocent - the saviour of Murcia can't be a crook surely (alledgedly)?  ???? 

They say when it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck then it must be a duck and this is possibly what Mr Samper has scored here for Murcia possibly and again alledgedly!
