Hi all,

I just want to let you all know how I managed to get my place filled with the exact furniture I wanted.

As most of you all know by now a lot of the furniture places in Spain which sell furniture packages are either unreliable, overly expensive and or both.

I spent a week or so in August when I came over trudging around various furniture places (you know the drill, half the problem is knowing where everything is)

After al of the legwork I thought it would make more sense to buy EXACTLY what I wanted here in the UK (afterall you can make use of all the sales, plus you know hte best shops to go to), and then hire a van with my brother and drive it all down. This though didnt exactly fill me with excitement as I can think of better things to do. So I set about pricing up removal charges to Condado from various firms.

Of course this is where I hit a snag as the quotes offered were ridiculous, ranging from £2200 up to £4000 !!

Then by chance I found a guy called Allan, who offered to do the job for £650 with guaranteed delivery times.

Sounds too good to be true doesnt it?

Anyway it turns out that some of the people I work with know this guy and vouched for him so I thought I'd give him a try.

So I bought EVERYTHING i needed over here, making sure I got the best deal possible on all items. Then gave Allan a call and aranged for him to pick up the items. The plan being I was going to arrive in Condado last Saturday evening and he would be there on my arrival.

Anyhow the night before I was flying out there I got a text message off him, explaining he's arrived a day early and seeing as how hehas nothing else to do, would I like him to put everything in place? ie put up beds etc....an offer I wasnt going to refuse considering I didnt really fancy the idea of getting stuck into it as soon as I arrived, so I text him back and told him to knock himself out.

Saturday morning arrived and another text from Allan. All of the furniture was up and in place, would I like him to nip to the supermarket and get some basics ready for my arrival?. You arent going to sday no are you??

So we arrived last Saturday evening, drove to Condado and sure enough there was Allan camped out in his van (he has a seperate sleeping section in his van), and true to his word thefridge was stocked with essentials and ALL of the furniture was in place and not one piece of damage to anything. Which considering we shipped out a glass topped dining table and 3 large mirrors I was delighted.

I cannot recommend this guy highly enough. He was a true professional and took care to make sure everything went smoothly.

For any of you who are sick to the back teeth of traipsing around Spain or dealing with furniture pack providers this HAS to be the easiest and most cost effective way of doing it.

All in including delivery it cost us £3500 to furnish our 2 bedroomed apartment, and after seeing others who had gone down the route of ordering from furniture pack providers the quality of our furniture was much better, everything had arrived as expected and it probably cost us 1/3rd of their costs.

To anyone who is interested, and honestly it was such a stress free experience I'd recommend it to everyone.

Heres Allans mobile number 07814961338. He does runs to and from every week. Let him know I recommended him (and no im not on commission), as he really did look after our items and went above and beyond what we paid for.

Oh my goodness that is one fantastic guy!

I wish I had known about him before I started collecting things here in this country and buying heavier goods over there.

Dwinder72 do you know if he just does full vans or would he do part frieghts because I have still got a large bottom drawer here in England to get over to Spain?

Does it matter what part of the country you are? Will he pick up from anywhere?

Hi Scapa,

he does full loads/ part loads, anything and everything. When I used him he had 2 other drops to do in Marbella but still had no problem keeping to his timetable.

He organises his pick ups in the UK working his way down the country (he's from Teeside), so will pick up from anywhere enroute. I'd imagine he'd also pick up from Scotland too if necessary. The guy was fantastic and it was a major help in getting our place sorted out.

Hope its of some help.

Hi

I'm hoping to complete late this year or early 2009. After reading the relevant threads, I think stuff like beds, linen, table, chairs etc could be bought in the UK.......even mirrors! All I have to worry about is white goods.

Does anyone know if bed sizes matter that much because if not, I would probably buy them in the UK.

Also, are there many people out there who may want to split costs if there's enough room in the van. If interested parties could leave a "yes" on this thread we could all pick it up and arrange things as and when.

Hi all

Arrived back from Condado on the 27th November after having Allen deliver my furniture, I know some of you were a bit concerned as to whether he was lagit. but I can reccomend him, he delivers all over Europe, hes reliable as long as the weather doesnt hold him up as in my case he got stuck in snow and delayed him, and very reasonable prices. He has given me his email address as its better to contact him through that as hes usually driving.

julie.graham2@virgin.net

also I think this is his ebay name ---- jasper3579

Hi All,

Alan has just been to our house this morning to collect our terrace furniture to take out.  His prices are really reasonable and he is a great bloke.  He is even going to check our apt to make sure that the snagging repairs have been done.  Would really recommend him.

Regards

Kelly & Simon

Hi everyone,

The more I think about whether to buy in the UK or wait until I get to Spain, the more I can't make my mind up...!!!

Can anyone tell me if the prices for beds, settees, tables, etc are cheaper here. I intend to shop in Ikea mostly so if the prices are the same it seems pointless buying here and paying extra to ship them over.

Can anyone offer any thoughts that could help make my mind up.

Thanks

Phil &  Debbie

Phil, Debbie

I found that with IKEA there was no simple answer, some items are cheaper, some more expensive, with no particular reason.  The way I did it was to look around the UK IKEA, get an idea of what I wanted then go on line and check the prices in UK and Spain.  For most there was little difference, but there were a few that were much cheaper in the UK, so I got the them and took them over - that said, the Euro rate was about 1.35 when I was buying!

The Spanish IKEA site is easy to navigate, as all the symbols are the same as the UK, so even without the language you can get around.

Good luck.

Ted

Hi Phil and Debbie,

Simon and I wanted to buy all of our furniture here and ship it over but were being quoted too much for the transit, that was of course we were recommended Alan, just a pity it wasn't a little sooner as we had already bought everything over there.

The main thing that we noticed was that Ikea's prices seem to be set internationally at a very wishfull euro rate should I say.  For example an item would cost £80 here and would cost approx 112 euros out there.  It appears that the exchange is set around the 140 mark, which consequently makes a huge difference when your spending 7,000 euros in the shop!

Over here the price of furniture is alot cheaper at the moment (Not in Ikea though), with shops throwing discount at you.  Are you due a trip over before you complete, so you can price up the items of your taste and compare with similar items in the UK?

I found loads of shops on ebay that had nice beds etc at very reasonable prices and funky styles too.  Bedding, soft furnishings, lamps etc I got here and put in my ever expanding suitcase, again a lot cheaper....

I priced items here to my taste and it all totalled £3,500 including accessories for the 3 bed ground, but due to the high transportation costs I was being quoted, I bought out there and spent £6,500 (Exchange rate at the time was 1.22) excluding the patio furniture and some prints, which I have bought here and shipping to Spain via Alan.  I was quoted 2,200 euros for the exact same set in Spain, but bought here and have saved myself over £1,000.  So I guess it pays to shop around.   We sourced and built everything up ourselves too(well my hubby built the flat packs and I supervised!), we never bothered with a furniture pack.  It was hard work and very late nights, but worth it!

Alan charges around £1,100 for a full van load.  If it is maininy flat packs then that should cater 2 apartments and load share. If I remember rightly though you have 2 to furnish, so you could save by buying here.

Kind Regards

Kelly & Simon

Hi all,

just catching up on this thread I started a few months back.

I'm so glad some of you have used Allan and reported back the same sentiments as I did way back when.

The guy is a star and well worth using.

P.S. for any of you so inclined I'm in J0812 and will hopefully be back out in the New Year, although my parents have 'bagged' my place from the end of January for a month so drop by and say hi as its their first time out.

Cheers

Dave
