Spanish Eyes, English Words

A blended blog - Spanish life and culture meets English author, editor and freelancer who often gets mistaken for Spanish senora. It's the eyes that do it! Anything can and probably will happen here.

What do you think of Benidorm?

Not the place itself - the television sitcom of the same name. I have to say I love it. It's so true to life, because like all good sitcoms, it takes a germ of truth and stretches it to make it funny. For example, there's Madge on her mobility scooter. While the streets of Benidorm aren't exactly running with the things, you certainly see more of them than in any other resort on the Costa Blanca. Going around the market, it seems as if every other person is on a 'Madgemobile.'

Every hotel seems to have at least one waiter like Mateo - out to score with as many English roses as he can. Mind you, having seen pictures of him on the beach in the local press, I think he could make this old lady very happy indeed. I'd certainly be up for some Spanish tuition - and I'm not talking about the language!

There are also a lot of tourists who are just there for the sun and the booze. They sit around the pool all day, then go for karaoke fuelled with industrial quantities of alcohol every night. They want everything with chips, and think Spanish food is 'foreign muck.' This is one area of the show which doesn't need to exaggerate too much.

Then the show takes the mickey out of the free coach tours - spending several hours in a demonstration for something overpriced that nobody wants, before getting a short time in the destination of choice, or sitting through a mediocre show. Fortunately, the free coach tour operators have improved the service since that hilarious episode was shown back in Series 1.

People in Benidorm are seeing the stars of the show around the resort - filming for Series 6 is now taking place until the middle of July - and there's a feeling that maybe the producers should be showing more of the 'real' Benidorm. I'd have to agree with that - there's much more to Benidorm than sun, sea sangria and Madgemobiles.

Hi Sandra. I love the programme and the place. In fact I watched the programme last night. I love Mateo, and couldn't believe it when I found out he was English as his Spanish accent is amazing. I love Janice and the way she is a great mum, daughter and wife and gran, but last night strangled the 'slapper' of a Liverpudlian and in another episode headbutted someone into the pool etc., and I love the ginger boy with his long shorts pulled up to his chest, and the marvellous Donald and Jacqueleeene. It's just brilliant stuff.
As for the place, I went there for the first time in years, last year, staying in the Hotel Alone (I think it was cala Finestrat - something beginning with 'f' anyway) - the kids were a bit disappointed as it was 99% Spanish (they speak Spanish so it's no novelty) - they wanted the 'British Benidorm' experience. I loved it though but was also surprised at how little English we heard at the beginning of June. I hope to go again soon - in fact I might persuade the kids if they think they've a chance of seeing the cast of the series.
We did have a thread about Benidorm a little while back on the Forum - my own personal opinion is that many Brits are quite snobby about it, but maybe because I come from the 'precariat' I like it.

I love the program also, have never been to Benidorm, but since seeing the show I want to go. Only if I can stay in an all inclusive, never done that either ! My husband thinks I am mad, by now he should know that I am, not just think it! Hopefully later this year I will get to experience Benidorm, fingers crosed !

@ Eggcup: I think Jake Canuso, aka Mateo has a gift for languages - among other things! In the extras on the first series DVD, he speaks perfect German, and Steve Pemberton - Mick Garvey - dresses up in drag. They're funny people in real life, which is why they're so good in the show.

@ Sam: All inclusive is very cheap in Benidorm - we did it for 54 Euro a couple in January, and it's only 100 Euro a couple in July and August. We stayed at the Hotel Regente. One of my first blog posts was about that trip, and I can certainly recommend it.

I'm glad you both enjoy the show as much as I do.

Can't stand either the place, or the "soap", though only saw the latter once, I think. Don't like, or watch soaps anyhow.

And no, I am not a snob, by any means. It is just a question of likes and dislikes, nothing more.

I must admit that years ago having to go there I was filled with dread but ended up pleasantly surprised & quite enjoyed it . If up that way I always make a point of coming off & going into Benidorm to eat in one of the many Spanish bars/restaurants. I do watch the show occasionally & find it quite enjoyable.
