The Benefits of Working from Home
Sunday, January 26, 2014 @ 3:50 PM

There are many advantages of working from home. First of all, you don’t need to get in a car and spend hours on the motorway. If it snows, rains, or simply too hot, you don’t need to worry about going out. The coffee pot is close by, and if you are hungry you can always grab a bite to eat.

There are also other advantages, and here are my top benefits of working from home.

  1. You can set your own hours. If you want to be active posting stuff on the internet at 10 pm you can. Alternatively you can get up at 6 am and start writing.

  1. It is cost effective. You are not paying for an office, so you don’t need to worry about rent, electricity and other expenses associated with an office or other business premises.

  1. It is convenient. I can have a cup of tea or eat when ever I would like.

  1. If I need to look something up I can. I have a bit of a reference library when it comes to herbs, and I like to get stuff right so I do check on things.

  1. No matter what people say, or how much they try to focus away from the issue, you do get to spend more time with your partner. It is nice, and sometimes, my husband does have some good ideas to add.

  1. You can bake a cake at the same time. Get it all ready, and pop it on the oven. You don’t need to worry about when you need to go out.

  1. Pet care – my cat and two dogs seem to have enjoyed my company. My cat, Cookie, has taken to sitting next to me. He has not been too much of a nuisance. I have the funny feeling he is keeping an eye on me.

  1. Enjoyment – I work from the dining table and I have had the most wonderful view. My terrace is a blaze of colour at the moment, and the birds seem to enjoy the bird bath and the food. It is so nice being able to see them and hear them.

  1. You don’t need to get dressed up. You can wear flip flops, or no shoes at all.

  1. Chocolate – I love chocolate, and the best thing about it all is; my husband is an expert in buying chocolate. Every so often he sneaks in with a little bit. It is apparently to keep my strength up.

There must be some down sides but I have to be honest and say I have not found any yet. Remember that it is still work, and if you want to make money you still have to put in the hours. I actually work from 9 am until about 7 pm, with breaks for lunch and dog walking. Am I more productive? Yes, fresh air breaks really help.

In my case, working from home is my only option. I have health issues which mean I haven't been able to work since 1996, but now at the age of 61 I've carved out a new career as a freelance writer.

So 'yes' to all your advantages, and add to that that even if you can't work outside, you may be able to work from home. With discipline, of course!

It is not for everybody but the employment world is changing so much it is worth considering.
