POLL: Would you still move to Spain if the UK shared its fantastic weather?
Wednesday, July 1, 2015 @ 2:07 PM

Britain is set to sizzle in temperatures of up to 34C (93F) today, with forecasters predicting the hottest day for several years. A tropical air mass moving from North Africa, Spain and Portugal means that we could be hotter than Rio de Janeiro. And now commuters, already suffering on their way to work in hot carriages, have been told they may face further misery as the sweltering heat may cause rails to buckle!

As a precaution Network Rail operators say speed restrictions have been put in place on some lines to prevent the rails from heating up too much, meaning delays are likely! The heat is on. They are saying that although it a max of 34ºC is predicted, the sensation will be more like 40.2ºC!

Now that's common in Spain but outrageous for the UK. Clearly  it is a passing heat wave but it led me to think, would people still retire to Spain if the UK shared its fantastic weather?

Just a small correction, if I may Mac! Your poll assumes everyone "retires" to Spain. Should it not read "move" to Spain? Many have moved here to work, to bring up kids, or simply to live here, PRE-retirement age!

Oh and the answer is a resounding "Yes!". Spain is MUCH more than its climate.

At the tail end of life Spain whose medical system depends on the extended family will leave the ex pat at a disadvantage because kith and kin are elsewhere. Remember it's not just British but people drawn from all over Europe and now South America is having the same demonstrations as has happened in the Middle East, although not reported by the Western press. With Spanish as there first language there arriving here and so are the drugs.

Yes due to mainly excellent outdoor lifestyle, Mediterranean diet and affordability.

If the UK had the same weather....not sure, its all hypothetical (big word for me!!) would the Uk be as pretty in the countryside...Me thinks not. With the sunshine you get a different landscape. For me, if britain had the same weather as Spain then l think l would buy me a narrowboat and spend my life at a nice slow place touring the canals.

Exactly, someone said above Spain is very much more than the weather.

We have a 10 point list to take out the emotion, if the location does'n't trigger the indicators then we look elsewhere.

So we have been looking for 4 years but we now have enough data to locate in Spain but we travel via Portugal this time so who knows? UK definitely out.

I know that I am in a huge, massive minority but I absolutely detest the Spanish climate and that is not why I live here. I am talking about Inland Spain, not the blasted Coast !! Last week up here temperatures hit 48 degrees, which is insane ! Last night, I could not go outside to water the plants; it was like opening the door of a fan oven ! We were told last week that the highest temperature ever recorded in Britain was 38.6 degrees; in Granada, in Summer, the temperature is above that virtually every day during summer, with no respite. Winter, of course, is very cold, usually colder than Britain between November and March ! Having endured / suffered this gruesome climate for almost eleven years now, I feel that anybody who goes on about Spain's "Fantastic climate" needs their head looking at - either that or they live on the coast !

Although I voted Yes, I would say that the weather and sunshine has a lot to do with the attitude to life and the sociability because of the outdoor life and cafe culture. The British change their attitudes when the sun shines. Everybody smiles. :)

There are more positive aspects to living in Spain than just the weather. You have to live here to appreciate them. Due to successive poor government policies and law changes, the country I was born and brought up in has changed to almost unrecognisable. At this time there is no foreseeable reason to return to UK.

Might have said 'no' before we moved out to Spain - but now that we've been here for 10yrs - we would not want to return. When we go back now - the traffic, density in population, etc - always make we look forward to returning to Spain. The UK is also no longer the UK I grew up in - too many people from all over the world - who not only want to bring their customs etc with them - they want to change the UK customs -live of the state (where I'm still paying taxes) - and our successive Governments have stood by and let it happen. The UK is has a much smaller land mass than Spain - but the rest of the world wants to relocate there. Could the ease of benefits be the reason??? Are we really surprised that he schools and hospitals are in crisis - and that no-one in Government seems to know why??? Here in Spain - you have to pay your own way, and respect their laws and traditions. Spain is a huge country - why don't those people want to come here?? Of course - you will always get your ignorant Brit - who wouldn't respect anything no matter where they were on the planet - but on the whole - most people I meet in our area of Spain - enhance the area - and respect the local people and traditions. I now feel more like a foreigner in the UK. So I'm staying here in Spain -where we're very happy and content.

This poll is difficult to answer because if the uk had the same climate as Spain, I would suggest a lot of the lifestyle associated wth warm/hot weather would take place in the uk.

We have been here eleven years and there are lots of things about Spain that drive us insane one of them being the paperwork which us connected to getting a car, becoming a resident, registering on the padron, and the awful habit of answering the telephone whether you are in an office receiving attention, or even in a small retail shop, the customer doesn't come first, the phone does. The weather and cost of living was our first draw here. Now it has become unbearable in the summer so we are away for six weeks then. Cost of living has definitely gone up. We will get peanuts for our beautiful home if we decided to sell and agents are very greedy asking sometimes 5 per cent! However we would never buy again in the uk. Parts are very depressing, but we do miss the culture, plays, shows, exhibitions, not the grandchildren as they live in Holland so makes no difference ..
