POLL : Which is Spain's most emblematic dish?
Wednesday, February 5, 2014 @ 12:27 PM

This poll came to mind because the other day I was having this very discussion with a group of Spanish friends. We were trying to decide which Spanish dish most resembled Spain. For example when you think Spain and Food which dish comes to mind? With me it is always Paella but from the Spanish point of view the food that they believed most represented their country was the Spanish omelette and  then the paella. Other foods such as gazpacho, serrano ham and chorizo etc were ranked according to the poll list. So I was interested in knowing the foreigners point of view, which food/dish could be considered Spain's most emblematic?

If you think there is a food that resembles Spain more than the ones listed please leave a comment.

It was a very close thing between paella and tortilla - if I could have voted for both, I would have. To me, though, paella is all about making a great meal with local ingredients.

Eggs and potatoes and onions can come from anywhere in the world and still make a great tortilla, but I've never had a really good paella outside Spain.

When you see a large pan of Paella, it can only come from Spain.

Spain's most emblematic dish? The large white thing on the roof on most expat's houses!

For the sake of this vote and being emblematic,I would list the order as :-

1.Paella
2.Tortilla
3. Chorizo
4. Serrano Ham

I think that Gazpacho and also Churros and chocolate are only really found out, when one lives or owns property outside of tourist areas. I know many people who have not even heard of these in this day and age.

Although for me, I associate Emperador as my No1 and Tapas as my No 2. emblematic dishes. Closely followed by a nice glass of Estrella and FC Barcelona.

OK, Spain's most emblematic dish, oddly hard to find, is Huevos a la Flamenca.

Difficult to answer this one since it depends what you mean by "emblematic." Paella is probably considered by most people to be the most "typical" dish (even though, strictly speaking, it is a Valencian dish which has been avidly absorbed into Spanish cookery) but as for the dish most frequently seen on everyday menus and most frequently eaten by Spaniards, I have no doubt at all that it is "Lomo a la Plancha." I am sick of the sight of it !In summer in Andalucía you certainly see much more Gazpacho than Paella.
