Fed Up with Litter

Litter Basura - Keep Torrevieja Tidy
Friday, April 24, 2015 @ 1:02 PM

I am  a neat and tidy person, ex Londoner.  In England I had 2 main careers  putting con men in the dock or on the TV screen.  I live in Torrevieja  for 2 years (2015).  I  came here for the sun.

I do not like the scruffy way the Spanish treat the environment we all have to share. I do not like their lack of care, responsibility.

I have tried contact Acciona about  street cleaning.  I spoke to Isabel in Madrid HQ, but her Torrevieja staff  do not answer her. I have been to the Torrevieja Tourist Office, Jean Paul, had an encouraging conversation with him, but since then zero response. I have tried the Town Hall  Prop Office, but again no replies.

I have many ideas how to prevent litter, rather than just sweep it up all the time. I have ideas about funding too.

I am looking for support  from any interested parties.

I must say I don't know Torrevieja very well, passed through couple of times but it never really appealed to me. I live in Valencia, in the heart of the city so it is very different. Can't comment of litter in Torrevieja but I can say that Valencia would be totally the opposite, i.e. it is spotless. Can't say litter has ever been a problem here, nor in Madrid nor in Barcelona from what I recall having lived in all three places. I have travelled to many small towns and villages in my 18 years here in Spain and I can firmly say that litter has never been an issue. So Torrevieja much be an exception to the norm. I totally disagree that the Spanish do not care about the environment, rules on preservation, especially in the countryside, are very strict and the vast majority of people respect the rules. Recycling is growing by the day and Spain is one of the countries that recycles the most. Over 70% of domestic packaging is recycled, above European average and that only happens when people are aware of their environment. You might have to take into consideration that almost 50% of the population in Torrevieja is foreign, not Spanish. Don't you think that might be related to the litter issue? Just a thought, Benidorm was a tip the last time I passed through there.

Anyway I think you are flogging a dead horse thinking you can improve the situation. The area is too touristy and has a fluctuating population throughout the year. The local government is coming up for elections so they won't listen to anybody at the moment, I doubt litter is high up on their agenda and at the madrid office of Acciona couldn't careless what you think. Not until they are at risk of losing the contract will they move a finger, and that will come from the local government, not an interested resident. Good luck though!

btw - the Spanish for 'litter' is 'basura por la calle'.
'Camada' is a 'litter of offspring' ie puppies.

Well thanks for the advanced google translation of BASURA. I agree town centres have priority about clean streets. I don't agree it's foreigners. I have seen the Spanish throw everything in the waste bins NEXT TO the recycle bins. Also the main litter items are drinks containers, cigarette packets cigarette ends and sweet wrappers, all mainly from Spanish hands. On Facebook Ex Pats forums litter is a notable complaint and a common complaint to the Tourist Office, because the litter is away from the town centre in residential areas. Thanks

Why do you assume I used google? Didn't intend to offend you with the translation of Litter, If I didn't speak Spanish fluently I wouldn't have picked up on it from just reading your post, I have no need to use Google translator fortunately, it's terrible. After 18 years in the country, if I still needed google translator it would be rather embarrassing wouldn't it?
Well as I said I don't know the residential areas in Torrevieja, so can't comment. Only I don't think you should generalise by blaming all the Spanish and criticizing them all for not looking after their environment, it simply is not true. But it may be the case in Torrevieja but statistics would say foreigner's are just as guilty.

"the main litter items are drinks containers, cigarette packets cigarette ends and sweet wrappers, all mainly from Spanish hands"

I'm not trying to be funny but how on earth can you reach this conclusion? How could you possibly know if it mainly falls from Spanish hands? It is such a frivolous comment. Anyway good luck to you.

By observation, walking dogs 4 times a day, picking up litter, binning it, and seeing 1st hand who does what for 2 years. True litter is a problem worldwide in todays take away throw away societies, and yes no nationality is squeeky clean. Resources are scant, but it is clear to me, that the locals and the holiday makers from Madrid, just drop empty containers , most of the Spanish smoke and most of the houses occupied here are Spanish owned.

Its Environment with an "e". See your name has changed again !! Split personality. You would do better photographing real eyesores, blots on the landscape. The appalling rubbish dumped by 2 bins now. Cardboard and assorted plastic waste. Empty bottles galore in the parque. By the way your dump site , that you never frequented is NOT there, where you said it was. Fortunately Fortuna does has some recycling bins, But the Spanish are one of the worse for recycling in Wn Europe, also one of the worse for litter.

how awful of me spelling with an e. shocking. Wish I was perfect. When your driving looking for litter try looking ahead and not to the side. The scenery is lovely around here.
They must have moved the tip as they do frequently I was only there last week. Google Earth 38deg 10'55.88" north 1deg 05'53.47"west, it is where I said. Try looking. Perhaps you could tow the pine tree up there.
If I knew who had dumped the other rubbish by the bins I would also pursue them as well

Well your neighbourhood watch needs to be more vigilant. And in the next few day when I can find time from moving in jobs and a house vacant for 2 years, where the previous owners gave up on the place, I am going to clear up that hideous mess of plastic bottles etc, some uncaring person has dumped. And though I spot litter, I also spot the splendid scenery, omg we are in danger of agreeing on something, sacre bleu !!! Satellite references handy too, steady on old chap, I may think you are trying to be helpful !!!
