Corruption returns to Manilva town hall
Tuesday, March 29, 2011 @ 1:01 PM

Antonia Muñoz in ManilvaI was not surprised to be reading this news item in El Pais today about the Mayoress of Manilva employing her family and friends in the town hall, and also the town hall contracting the services of a company owned by her husband.

Why no surprise?

Because I'd already heard about all of this over my morning coffee across the road.

But one is innocent until proven guilty, and now that this case is being taken up by a judge in Estepona, we'll have to wait and see what the outcome is.

The timing could not possibly have been any worse seeing as the elections are just around the corner.

Despite all of this, I do actually think she's done a reasonable job as Mayoress and she has some good councillors on her side, such as Mario Jimenez (a really decent guy) and the one in charge of the foreigners department, whose name I can't recall, but he's also really good.

She also has some not so great people on her side though, such as "DD" who I was close to punching once as well as my old "friend" Zotano...although not sure if he's defected to another party again.

Still, I find it sad that a small town like Manilva can feature so many times in the press with links to corruption and underhand practices.  And as they say, there's no smoke without fire.

Talking to some local friends this morning, they were saying that they just want someone decent and honest in the town hall but they simply don't know who that person is.

Now, who's that guy representing the PP....he seems to be a bit of a mystery and no one seems to say anything bad about him.  A good candidate for the job?  We'll see.

Same in Polop. Apart from the Mayor being shot 3 years ago by the competition and therefore the next mayor, all his family work in the council. For example go in the tourist office and his daughter works there, she speaks only Spanish and has no interest in speaking to the various tourists, thats when its open of course.

Hi Justin,

The guy in the Foreigner´s Department is Diego Urieta. He is doing quite a lot for the expats in the area.

The PP representative is Francisco Miguel Alvarez Gil. He was already mayor in 2005, so he is not such a mistery :)

We can agree and I hope not to see Zotano´s face as Mayor after the 22nd of May. If we want to talk about corruption he is involved in almost all the cases since 2005 (caso Ballena Blanca) until now, so don´t know how he can have the audacity to run for Mayor.

With regards to Antonia Muñoz, at the end of the day she has done more for Manilva than any other in the last years and I believe that is why the opposition is trying to find some dirt on her.

All the major players in these ellections have been Mayors before, the question is who managed to stay for the full 4 years (until now just Antonia Muñoz) and who actually did something for Manilva and the citizens?

What a sin verguenza. She's supposed to be a communist as well. What a joke.

Manilva is a very corrupt place, don't move there if you are looking. Find a nice place away from the coast.

Anybody know if they're investigating any old cases? e.g. looking into how certain mayors suddenly had a lot of cash and built themselves several houses when they were in power? And at the same time did nothing for their towns even though there was a whole load of foreign money coming in?

You came close to punching DD? - I take it that's Diego D - what on earth happened? I've known him for 30 years and he's an OK sorta person albeit rather ineffective.

Ed, it's a long story but let's just say when I met with him he didn't have a clue what he was talking about and his stupidity affected many people. I really was close to punching him and I'm not even a violet man!
