Focus on plight of expats in BBC programme 5th February
Friday, January 27, 2012 @ 2:16 PM

EXPATS LIVING on the Costa Blanca will feature in a BBC programme as they struggle to cope in the ongoing Eurozone crisis.

A team from BBC Look East visited the coast this week to investigate the affects of the Spanish recession and found there were stories of hard times but no panic.

And RTN was invited to join the debate to give an overview of the situation as the area’s favourite free newspaper, meeting Andrew Sinclair, the BBC Political Correspondent for East Anglia.

Andrew explained he felt it was time to tell the story of British citizens who had moved to the sun but now struggling to cope in the recession and with sterling’s value depressed against the euro.

“It struck me there has been a lot of reporting in the UK about the impact ongoing euro crisis is having on holiday businesses and British businesses in general,” he said. “But no one was saying how the crisis was affecting expats, people who came out here to Spain to get away from all the problems in the world and we have found there is some real hardship out there.”

CLASS
He said expats were keen to point out they were not “stinking rich”, adding “a lot of people we spoke to were very much working class, they didn’t have large fortunes to bring to Spain but felt they could do better for themselves than just living on a council estate”.

Andrew added: “They were telling us: ‘don’t think we are rich millionaires, we are trying to make a better life for ourselves and it is a struggle’.

“I am not trying to paint a picture of how terrible life is out here – it’s not. But there is concern and worry about the crisis.”
Andrew said the Foreign Office had confirmed there were contingency plans being drawn up in the UK if “the balloon went up” and there was a widespread panic return to Britain.

He said that was obviously a worst case scenario and the programme was likely to feature people explaining how they were making ends meet or how they were unable to return home for health reasons because their money was tied up in property and they could not sell up.

The report is scheduled to be screened on Sunday 5th February. Sunday Politics is shown from 11am and the regional slot will be screened about 11.30am.

Why don't the BBC make a program about the problems in there own back yard, before snooping into others !!
Typical of the UK, divert & ignore !

If you think you have problems here, wait till you go to England

unless you have no house no money no job

then perhaps the tax payer will keep us in luxury

Even if we are English

Most of my friends here in Spain are finding it harder to live now than say 5 years ago. But NOT one of them has any thaught of a return to the blight that was once our lovely Britian.

A comment above was that 'we are not millionares' no we are not but the Spanish think we are and I am now sick and tired of being overcharged, sometimes by as little as 20 cents! Today we had two coffees in Garucha and the guy behind the bar said it was 4 euros, I said he was joking and he reduced it to 3 euros, come on, and Spain is surprised it has a crisis, their solution seems to be to up the price when things are tight rather than reducing the prices and selling more. I now make a point of never using anyone a second time who overcharges me. I cannot list all those here who have overcharged me, or tried to as the page is not big enough.

I cannot think of very few people these days who are NOT "working class". Even people with 7 (or more) figure incomes go to work.

Uprooting and heading off to the MedWorld used to be the privilege of those who were comfortable with all the associated expenses that such living entailed. No one ever really envisioned the council flat people following the suit.

Quite a few people thought that if the big earners can make it, they, the low earners can make it, too. We all know that this has been an example of wishful thinking from the very beginning. The day of reckoning has come, though. Sad as it may be to many...

Sorry to be prosaic but is this programme only airing on BBC East Anglia? If so I'll have to plug my Skybox in. OK I should comment on the idea of "poor suffering Brits" (especially as the UK thieve the hard earned and paid for pensions of so many of us) but there are so many arguments to make, especially as I was just barred from an area of Birmingham where there are signs of, "No Whites At Night" but then find a sudden very anti English attitude and two tier price structure in France which has also made me isolated. No wonder Brits end up in ex-pat ghettoes, we are genuinely marginalised!

We are living in Spain for nearly 5 years, and we can not complaint too much, we had to tight our belt regarding money, and continue enjoying our Spanish sunshine, when we look back to try to find ourselves, if we ever need to go back to the Uk we know we could never survive living there are, the cost of living in England is just too expensive, just the thought paying housing rates in the Uk gives me shivers and on to make thing worse the thought of the dull and grey weather we used to have. If we are short of money at least we can just to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine!. or have a cup of coffee for 1 euro We just been to England and I dont know how my family cope, they get ripped off for anything. I jus want to say that so far we are happy living here in Andaluz

Re DK above: does he live in the same world as me, I hope not, just who are 'the council flat people'? what total snobbery which for a lot of us was a good selling point for leaving England to get away from such attitudes.

I moved to Spain a few years ago from Dubai and have no problem with life here. Its not a case of whether I have money or not, some people who are a bit short would have the same problem in UK except get ripped off more there.
What really irks me with these BBC exposes is the whole intent. Pearse Morgan (spelling?) came to Dubai and was only interested in getting silly Brits to make a fool of themselves bragging about what they had. The real people and the real Dubai got past him. He did the same in Marbella, a complete jerk. The BBC has an anti Conservative bias since the days of the wonderful Mrs Thatcher. I would guess their intent was to show what Cameron and his cronies are doing even to the so called rich set in Spain. People need to respond forcefully when faced with these questions. As one of your messages said, sort out your own s*** first.

reading the comments I can sympathise but what about people like myself who paid a large deposit on a villa as a retirement home which due to the banking crisis was never built despite bank guarantees and Spanish and EU law I am still waiting for the return of my deposit possible 2015 ten years after paying it and our MEPs and local MP couldn.t care less and to cap it all a romanian woman can afford to go to EU court and get even more money from the taxpayer more than a lot of people earn going to work

Watched it, I cannot think why they broadcast it and what interest it would be to anyone in UK or even Spain for that matter. It was very brief which is probably just as well as it was so boring.
