Was going to Spain from start to finish but now I, Luca have taken over

Was about researching about where to look & about living in Spain I am here. So was for anyone interested here are the good & bad things that happened to me. But now I (Luca) will tell you about my experiences, both very bad, better and good.

Must reach a decision soon!

The final day of house searching proceeds today & we are off to Sedella just above Valez-Malaga & as usual we will leave soon to look around early in the morning. We are seeing Juan at about 11.00 to 11.30am.

Yesterday was good, going back to survey the houses & area that were initially in my thoughts & Tim was again an excellent host.

The weather was sunny but cold in the shadows. This time we used his car as I think perhaps he had had enough of my faltering driving around the narrow country roads & even narrower little village streets. The excellent thing about Tim is that although he wants his properties let or sold he showed no signs of pushiness (or is that an excellent salesman technique?).

For anyone wanting to view this area I recommend him highly.

The three properties did not lose any of their initial "gloss" & are very much in my thoughts.

I think though that although I am even more set on coming to Spain I'm not certain that Richard has the same intensity as I. Must get it right for my wife as well.

Just had a 'Google map' drive around Sedella. How very quaint, it looks very Spanish with extemely narrow streets. Good luck if you purchase a property here, hope you like steps?

Yea you are right James, of course they wanty me to reach a decision quickly & I don't blame 'em.
But I decided this afternoon to go home to talk to several people first.
Thanks James & yes John the village is really superb but too hilly with far to many steps.
There are now four properties I will discuss with my wife, kids & family.
I'll try to post a few pictures on my blog when I get home.

Exciting times, but you are going to rent first, yes? If so then if you have made a minor mistake you can at least explore other areas whilst you are there. Looking forward to hearing more......

Did you explore nearer to Velez and Nerja? That was the area you originally said you were interested in, yet you have mostly been exploring further inland. There are lots of lovely villages around Lake Viñuela, and a really cute cottage to rent near Benamargosa for just €300 pm inc internet. If you aren't great at speaking Spanish, the villages immediately east of Lake Viñuela have plenty of Brits, and Brit-run shops and bars.

I did look around Nerja, Frigiliana etc Tamara but was unhappy with the attitude of some of the estate agents in that area. That is why I moved further out.
Louise I am renting for a while so no worries their.
Go home today or I would go up to Benamargosa Tamara but I have decided not to jump in now but go home to discuss it further with my wife, she tells me the weather in Staffordshire is awful although it's been quite poor here. Lake Vinuela? we may have been their yesterday, we were within 30 kilometres of your village Tamara.

Don't be put off an area you like because of the attitude of estate agents, Gerry. They have their own agenda and many of then are having a hard time! I doubt if many are as honest and helpul as Georgia on this site. You'll know the area you want to spend some time in when you find it (once you have gained the knowledge and experience to discount places that may be gorgeous but unsuitable for you and your wife's needs) and (most) agents won't have anything to do with your choice!

Hi Gerald. We've just experienced the 'manta de lluvia' as well and got back courtesy of Ryanair last night. I think it's good that you've seen Spain in the rain; and depending on the year, you can get several quite cold months (during the nights) and should always bear this in mind when buying a house. I also think you shouldn't be put off by Nerja estate agents and/or be influenced by friendly ones. There is a tendency for some agents to behave like they're your best friends until you've bought and then you're suddenly not part of their family anymore... It's purely business to them. I'm also glad to hear you're going to rent first. All the best.

Good luck Gerald. Remember: make haste slowly. You will know when you have found the right place. Glad to hear you will rent first.

As for the rain, well, it has to rain or othrwise the whole country would be a desert (sadly part of Spain already is). The rain is so welcome after the killing heat of the Summer. Months and months of the vehement blue deadly hot sky.
When you have lived in the country for a long time you will start to wish for rain.

So don't be put off by some temporary wet weather.

All the best
Patricia

Another thought Gerald. It's not just about the actual property, but the area is so important too. Because you are used to being so busy and being on committees etc., I just sense that an area where there is more going on for expats, like Nerja, would be better for you, as you'll find it impossible and/or stressful to suddenly just slow down. I don't mean to interfere; I'm just trying to think about how life will be for you and your wife. Personally, I found life in a fairly small village a bit boring - great for holidays, but not so much for living in. But it does depend on what you're looking for.
