Fight for Tidus' rights!

This blog is for Tidus. Tidus was murdered in Valencia, Spain, in the most depraved and callous manner. He was set alight. His attackers poured petrol over his small body and, when he burned, they watched him suffer in agony and then they went away... Tidus didn't die immediately. He survived long enough to become an emblem for other victims of his kind, and the images of his dignified suffering and his struggle to live flashed across the globe. His killers must be brought to justice. A crime like this cannot possibly go unpunished! Or can it? You see ... Tidus was a dog.

Fight for Tidus
Sunday, January 6, 2013 @ 7:53 PM

Tidus was a dog, who loved his life, and like all animals, he lived in innocence.  Then, in the first days of November 2012 he crossed paths with a group of dangerous human beings, who, being sick in their souls and in their minds, took advantage of their superior strength to torture Tidus and inflicted on him the most dreadful suffering, just because they could.

In spite of his dreadful injuries, and when he was finally helped he was grateful and loving and he conquered hearts across the world.  He underwent painful treatments and surgery, but his injuries were too severe.  Tidus died, his innocent life extinguished.

Had Tidus been a child, a human being, that had been found tethered, charred almost to death, but not dead ... quivering in agony.  What would the reaction have been? from the general public? from the police? from the media?

There is no doubt that the law would view this as the most heinous of crimes and the culprits would be swiftly tracked down, taken to court and sentenced to long sentences for murder.  Nothing could undo the crime, but there would be the very strongest consequences for such actions.

The reason we have such consequences for serious crimes are twofold: firstly to protect others from falling victims to people who are clearly lacking in the qualities we expect from a human fellow being, and secondly to send out the strongest warning to those people who may be contemplating committing similar crimes, that this behaviour is unacceptable.  I believe that depriving people of their freedom is possibly just an inevitable consequence of separating the dangerous from the sane, and not an act of retribution, because, frankly nothing could make up for a crime of this nature.

Were it not for Viktor Larkhill, an extraordinary human being, totally dedicated to fighting for the rights of abused animals in Spain and Turkey and wherever he is needed, we would never have heard of Tidus, nor known of his dreadful fate.  He would have died with no voice, like the other dogs who were burned to death before him and yes, there were others.

Thanks to Viktor, we shared a little of Tidus’ pain, of his hope and most importantly, we were able to send him love.  Love poured in for Tidus from across the world.  Now tears have been shed for him in Denmark, Ulang Bator, the UK, Nicaragua, Cameroon to mention but a few places.

Tidus has become an emblem.  He ‘speaks’ for all animals.  His suffering highlights at long last the terrible plight that animals suffer at the hands of human beings, sometimes without us even knowing it.

Tidus’ martyrdom comes at a time when many of us acknowledge, at last, the urgent need for change if we are to survive and have a future.  We need to reassess the way that we look at the world and challenge the old values that support our egoistic views of humanity and of our role in the whole of existence.   Human beings are a single part of a system.  Whether more or less ‘complex’ or ‘sophisticated’ we may be as compared to others, the fact is that our role’s are equally important.  Can we say that the heart is less important than the brain, or the liver or the knee?  Ha! some may say, clearly the knee could be dispensed with? but, could we dispense with all knees? what then? We need to value and respect each an every form of life, because we are all connected and only when we acknowledge this fact, will we be equipped to move forward in a way that is no longer destructive.

Tidus presents the local government of Valencia, with a unique opportunity to make the first change to the way in which The Law views crimes perpetrated on non-human beings.  This precedent could be a catalyst for   global changes to the laws protecting the animal kingdom from abuse and giving them the status they deserve.  Equality in the right to live safely, in freedom, within family groups, their needs and wishes taken account of, free from suffering a pain and suffering. Not that long ago, it was slaves and women vying for the same rights and the notion that they were ever regarded as lesser beings, deserving less respect, now seems absurd.

The purpose of this blog is to:

  1. raise and spread awareness of the dreadful crime that was inflicted on Tidus, so that pressure will be put on the Spanish Government to use the law to bring Tidus’ killers to justice and make a clear statement that crimes like this must never happen again.
  2. provide a platform for discussion on the subject of the definition of crime and how the law applies it to non-human animals.
  3. provide a platform to discuss how we imagine living according to holistic principles of connectivity. What changes will we need to make when we acknowledge that all forms of life (including minerals) perform essential roles and are inextricably woven into a single system. Our survival depends on the survival of everything else, so ... how do you see our role?

we have responsibility to speak up for those who cannot defend or speak up for themselves.Tidas endured enormous pain and suffering -this being one of the whose forms of animal abuse. He survived it all and fought valiantly and this story just brings to light the need for new laws and harsher punishment for those who think it is okay to commit such evil crimes. The law need to protect these and animals and Tidas abusers must be found, held accountable for the crimes and punished harshly.this should send a message out that animal abuse will not be tolerated at all

Get the sick scums for severe punishment, otherwise, they will either hurt or kill people when they grow up.

I was so saddened and sickened by what I heard had happened to Tidus. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering he went through, but hope that the people that inflicted this upon him might feel twice the pain they inflicted. Prison would not be enough punishment for someone like this, as they obviously have no regard for anybody or anything and do not value life.

Spain's record on animal rights is appalling. Brits should vote with their feet and holiday elsewhere until things start to change.

Dear Sharon, I am a Spanish citizen and would like to tell you that your comment is not very helpful: there are thousands of Spanish organizations protecting animals (and inside them hundreds of thousands of Spaniards funding them, taking care of animals, pets, etc...), and if you see the reaction from Spanish people on Tidus case you would understand what I am saying. In my city there is a 30 percent pet per house, and I can tell you we take care of our dogs and really love them. You shoud not blame on everybody, but on responsibles. You cannot blame on every Brit on being alcohilic hooligan but on those who are.

Like the majority of people I'm terribly affected by hearing of such dreadful reports of animal cruelty. What I don't know is whether the Spanish authorities are working hard to bring the culprits to justice or whether it's put down as another statistic of unsolved crimes. I also don't know the laws/punishment in Spain regarding such cruelty. I hope they're severe. I also hope they make an example of the culprits if they know who they are and have enough legal powers to put them away for a long time. I understand Lazaro's comments but he has not read Sharon's comments correctly. She makes no reference to Spanish people and I would support her comments as much if it had happened in my own country, UK. I'm sure the majority of people in virtually all countries are of similar minds. The big question is: how can we effect change in laws to make this a much more serious issue and can someone not help locally to track down the culprits. They must have bragged about this to some of their friends. Otherwise this will just disappear until another similar crime is reported.

What is going to be done? I live in Spain and the laws are not as hard as they should be. So I think it is perfect to put pressure on Valencia and rest of Spain to solve this crime and the others, as you say there has been other dogs burned after and before Tidus. This has to stop. And as you know sooner or later they will burn a human. So please let us do something.

One of the laws by which the Universe works is that we always get what we give ... the cruelty towards defenseless, innocent Tidus will return to his doers regardless of anything ... acts of atrocities such as this one is an evidence of the potential for violence and cowardice that these people carry!... they are dangerous to society and should be put away in jail and not being around ... who is gong to be their next victim??? ... are we going to wait???

We must all do our best to put pressure on this government to get some real investigation going. Sadly, in many countries, animals are expendable, and we have an uphill battle to convince the authorities to see them otherwise. We face some of the same obstacles in North America, so shouldn't feel too smug.

I had sent a message to the Mayor of Valencia on her Facebook page (Rita Barbera). But on the Mayor's website (http://www.ritabarbera.com/) it seems impossible to send an email, or only the Spanish nationals can. This matter is in the authorities' hands. Unless the local police and the official responsible authorities act, there will be no justice. I believe people that are concerned about this cause, should try to pressure the Mayor.

We should consider each life as being precious - no matter whether it is a human or animals life - and therefor the law should be very strict if an individual is tortured / mistreated / abused / killed - no difference between a human or an animals life.
I hope that the government of Sevilla (and of whole Spain) will recognize the worldwide protests and that they will do everything possible to catch the criminal teenagers. Such subjects (I do not say "human" as I see nothing human in that) must be caught and sent to jail - and yes, I do see a difference between a criminal who did e.g. betray or something like that and a subject who does such things - they should not be in the same place at jail - people who are able to do such things and watching the pain and agony of another creature by being amused about it - they are very very insane and a big big threat for any community - and this must be understood by the government.
I am aware and know that there are many animal lovers in Spain, like in every country - IMO it is not a matter of the country but of some people who are insane, not able to live with the others in community.
Maybe one should again - like for Tidus' treatment - collect some money, this time for the purpose to GET those who did this to Tidus ! - Sorry but money talks best - everywhere !
I really hope that JUSTICE for Tidus is reached !!!

How on earth can anyone do this? How can they actually enjoy torturing an animal this way? because they are very dangerous sick individuals that will not only do it again, but they will easily harm others, yes, children and adults, therefore, it is extremely important that these soulless beings be found and punished re Jail As Soon As Possible!!!! Smarten up SPAIN, do the right thing and find out who did this absolutely horrible, horrible torture to this sweet poor dog, for the love of God, Please!!!

Am I missing something? Where is the email or website in Spain that we can go to directly to express our anger at those who hold the responsibility for tracking down these criminals. Seems inefficient just to blog about it on the internet when we should be directing our anger to the authorities in Spain.

TO LAZARO;
if this were true, then the police would be out looking for the horrible teens that burned Tidus. They could look in the park where this happened and question people with pets that frequent there, question any teens lurking around, offer a reward for information leading to finding the teens, etc....
they do not care cause Tidus was "just a dog" well, I say, SHAME ON YOU, WHERE IS YOUR HUMANITY?

There are sick, evil and damaged people all around the world. The difference is how police and civil authorities respond. I personally feel that cruelty to animals is worse than most crimes because the victims can not defend nor speak for themselves. Also, unfortunately, these are the crimes that lead to human victims. The authorities rarely act until a person is attacked. I wish to believe that Karma will get them, but it probably wont. Not in this life.

The Spanish government cannot let this heinous crime go unpunished. It is an abomination. These vile attackers must pay for their actions.

"I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man."
-Mohandas Gandhi

Those who took pleasure in harming an innocent and defenseless animal are just a few steps away from possibly harming a human. They are remorseless and soulless. I ask the Spanish government to please show the world that you are just and caring. Please look into your heart. It will guide you to do what is right.

I cried almost all of New Year's day for Tidus after I heard he had died. These monsters who did this is NOT human, and yes, they will do it again and escalate to people, as they are psychopaths. I believe karma will get them, but IO WANT the Spanish authorities to catch these criminals and make them pay. I am sure the owner of Tidus will be able to recognise them again, so they CAN catch them...PLEASE!!!!!

Tidus deserve justice, those monsters who did this to him should be go to jail for long years. They are potential serial killers. The are very dangerous to any thing around them., even their own parents and friends! Do they know what are they doing? Do they approve this? Where is the community power? This is what this community chooses for live??
Please honour your self and bing to justice these criminals!

- Helen Keller said it best: Being born of the human race instead of the animal kingdom does not give you more rights. It gives you more responsibility. Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.

Are there any updates on this case? Have any of the torturers been found? On another site it was mentioned that others' have been burned and are being burned. I am terrified that this is becoming a trend. I pray that the police are taking this seriously and people are watching out for more of this happening. We all must help so that this never happens again. Laws and awareness and HUGE fines are a start. God bless that little dog, hopefully his plight will remain in peoples memories to inspire appropriate action for the defenseless.
