Returning to the UK

I am researching the reasons why some British expats in Spain are deciding to return to the UK. If you intend to leave Spain and relocate to the UK I would appreciate your help. This is serious academic research so your thoughts etc would be useful for expats who have now left Spain.

Return to the UK.

Hi,

I am really looking forward to receiving comments from any expat over the age of 55.

Hi there. You might want to ask Mac75 for some help with this. He does lots of polls on this site and these stimulate quite a few comments. This might be a good starting point for you, if you can think up some key questions, maybe he could do the poll/help you do it? As someone who has returned to the UK from Spain, I can cite various reasons off the top of my head:
1. I was bored living in a small village. After a busy few years finding the right place to live, building a house etc., I decided it was too quiet for me.
2. With children aged 8 and 9 by the time we came back to the UK, I had been worried that the local Instituto was just too rough.
3. We had business interests in the UK which needed more input.
4. I was fed up of the corruption and bureaucracy in Spain.
If you read my blog on Spain, you'll get the idea.
All the best.

Hi There, yes I would happily set up a poll for you if you give me the options you would like the members to choose from and the question to ask. They tend to work very well and normally get 600+ votes so it might be useful. Otherwise you might want to set up a thread rather than a blog, it will be easier for people to contribute and generate a discussion on the topic.
I am under 55 so my comments probably aren't relevant, but I have no intention of going back to the UK :-)

Hi mac 75. Thanks for your offer to help me. I need info on the reasons, problems and issues of deciding to return to the UK. Some of the questions that could elicit a response would be e.g. Do/Did you feel vulnerable about your health, loss of quality of life, loneliness, death of a partner etc. which influenced your decision to return? Has the financial economic downturn affected you to the extent that you had to return to the UK? Were there any family problems which worried you prompting your return to the UK to support them? These are typical questions which would be of help to me. All information I receive will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Let me know if you receive the above post. I am OK with what call normal computing but I am a novice at blogging, threading etc. I will very much appreciate your help in hearing about stories of returnees to the UK

Received! I will put together a poll over the weekend. I will send you a PM (private message) once it is live. Once up and running if you want to alter anything just let me know. If anything the data will help.

We have pur house up for sale and we have put it as low as possible so we can move back home. The reasons for moving back are varied. As seems normal for a lot of women I miss my family and although the Spanish are wonderful and welcoming i find it hard to speak Spanish. When I watch programmes they all say "oh yes we must learn Spanish", it is much more difficult than you think. I can have a conversation but when it comes to official things it gets very difficult.
The healthcare has been fantastic and my husband has tested it to near death situations and survived.
We have had a fire in our casa and the bomberos plus the policia were wonderful even finding us a place to stay in the middle of the night.
i am worried about going home as I might lose as much as I gain but the need for family as we get older is getting greater.
Hope this helps and will keep you informed how it all goes. Biggest problem is selling the casa.
Mazo

Hi Mazo1952
Thanks for your very useful information. I live in Andalusia but also have a house in Murcia which is up for sale. Please do keep in touch and perhaps some time I could interview for my research nothing too daunting more like a story of your reasons for returning. Best wishes

Hi Mazo1952.

Have you sold your house yet? Is it possible that I could speak with you by telephone? Best wishes from a rainy Costa del Sol
