Public sector salaries to be cut again in Spain?
16 June 2012 @ 18:31

One of the IMFs suggestions last week to help Spain cut it massive budget deficit was to cut public sector salaries.  Government workers in Spain have already had their salaries reduced by 5% under the previous government back in 2010.  So further pay cuts are not likely to go down with public sector workers and their unions.

I'm sure it is a matter of time before the paga extra is abolished, particularly for public sector workers,  Basically in Spain, you get an extra month's pay in the summer and at Christmas, so you effectively get 14 pays each year.  Its kind of like a bonus.  If the IMF/EU do a full bailout of Spain, which is looking increasingly likely, this has to be one of the first things to go.  Spanish functionarios generally only work until 3pm and they also disappear to a bar for half an hour mid morning for their breakfast, so it's a nonsense that these people get paid this bonus.  They don't deserve it.

I rang a fucionario in the local ayuntamiento at 9.30 am one morning as I had to ask a question about something or other. He was not there because he had gone out for breakfast. He had only started at 9.00 am.....................any wonder the country is in diff´s. My brother in law and his wife are both teachers (Well one is a teaher and the other is a psycologist who works in school) live on the coast (Sanlucar de baromeda) in a house with ssecurity gates and get double wages in summer and Christmas.................any wonder the country is in diff´s. In the town of Marmolejo, in Andalucia, they built an indoor swimming pool, that cost I don´t know what, that is now lying empty (There is an outdoor olympic sized pool right beside it). It is lying empty because they now realize that to make the pool cost effective they would need 700 people paying 3 euros to enter the building every day. This in a town of 7500 people....................any wonder the ccountry is in diff´s but then again who really is to blame the Spanish for one of many, many wastes of European money or the EU for not checking where our hard earned taxes are being spent.

Too right, there are too many basically incompetent people getting paid way more than they should be.

Town Hall workers arrive late, go off for 'breakfast'...I always like to point out that myself and my children have 'breakfast' before we leave the house like in most other countries.

The Opposition exams are to blame. You finish Uni and go for one of these mass exams where the lucky chosen ones get a job for life. Maybe they were lucky that day, maybe their Uncle, Cousin etc. etc. works in the town hall already and helped them through... but they are incompetent and useless and wouldn't last a day in a private company.

Too right they should stop double pay. I'm going to buy our bank manager a kettle from the chinese shop as a present and to point out that her staff spend more time out in cafes than actually working!!
