Massive pedestrian queue getting out of Gibraltar this afternoon
25 May 2012 @ 16:31

For the last week or so there have been horrendous queues for both scooters and bikes getting out of Gibraltar on an evening, due to the fishing dispute.  Car queues have been up to 3 hours this week, and 1 hour plus for Scooters.

Today, it looks like the turn of the pedestrians.  There's currently a massive queue getting out on foot.  Here's a picture of the queue taken at 3:30pm:

This is not much fun for those of us commuting in an out of Gibraltar every day for work...

Moral of the story: Don't upset Gibraltar! You sound like you are on the side of the Spanish.

You had written in the email with this link: " Massive pedestrian queue getting out of Gibraltar

Moral of the story: Don't upset Spanish fisherman. But seriously, UK/ Spain relations are continuing to take quite a hit over this issue now. "

While the demo on the Spanish side was going on, there was hardly a car on the Gibraltar road going into Spain.

I've heard that people who work in Gibraltar and live in Spain, were given time off to attend the demo - it's been reported that 35 people or so were at the Spanish demo. (Where were the rest?) I believe they were demostrating against there being such long queues. Who makes the queues long?!!!

It is said that the Spanish are fishing in British Waters with illegal nets.

I do feel that you have painted only a tiny part of the story.

I'd also heard that Spanish fishermen have been using illegal nets. They are apparently quite famous for poaching in others waters......

I've also seen in our local market those tiny eels which I believe are protected? My husband, who's Spanish, said that people like them so they'll keep fishing for them.

Spain needs to realise that they can't just carry on doing whatever the heck they like and ignore all the rules. They received an enormous fund of money from Europe and they need to have more respect in my opinion.
