Breaking News: General Election in Spain to be held in November
29 July 2011 @ 12:57

Zapatero has just announced that the Spanish parliament will be disolved in September and elections will take place in November.  This, he says, is to promote stability, with a new government in place before the end of the year.

Why would a president that has just seen his party massacred in local and regional elections bring a general election forward? To avoid the indignity of going to Brussels cap in hand asking for emergency funding perhaps? Not much of a legacy is it? This is a double-edged sword in my opinion. Great to have the opportunity of ejecting the incompetent socialists from office, but let´s see how flexible the unions are when it is a right wing government imposing the necessary spending cuts / labour reforms / tax hikes required to keep the country afloat. Expect 2012 to be a year of general strikes and protests. It is going to get very ugly.
