Another strike in Spain?
23 March 2011 @ 09:18
La Liga strike over tv rights is possible in April, with the weekend of April 2/3 being under threat.
The Spanish Football League (LFP) has threatened to postpone a round of matches in April over a dispute with the Spanish government about TV rights. The LFP wants the scrapping of regulations which state that one La Liga game per match day has to be shown on free to air tv. The LFP is hoping this rule will be abolished before the 2012-13 season.
The LFP, backed by the Spanish football federation (RFEF), wants an end to the free match rule to help strengthen the clubs' bargaining powers in negotiations on tv rights with broadcasters.
So far, talks between La Liga officials, the government and parliamentary groups have been unable to make any progress, so the threatened strike is still on the cards.
