IBI bills up by 14%
20 January 2011 @ 13:35

I recently received notification from the local council in Manilva that the IBI on our property is rising from 210 euros to 240 euros per year.  I make that a 14% increase over the previous year!.  The last inflation figures I saw for Spain was 2.3%, so that means IBI has risen by 6 times the rate of inflation.  It's still very low compared to the UK's council tax, but I don't know how they can justify such a massive rise?

I guess the reason is that Manilva town hall is more or less bankrupt and has been struggling to pay council workers' salaries over the last couple of years.  Apparently they only received their November salaries at the end of December.  I don't know if they have had their December salaries yet...

It's a similar problem for many councils along the Spanish costas with the big fall in property/contruction related revenue, so I expect other councils are also massively increasing IBI as well.

Luckily I don't have to pay IBI.  My landlord does.

Ah, but he'll not want to pay it so expect a rent rise. ;-)

Roy,
Landlords in Spain are in no position to put up rents due to the massive oversupply of properties on the market. Rents are plummeting. We got a 10% rent reduction off our landlord at the back end of last year. We could probably get another 10% knocked off when we/if we renew later this year,
