Hiring a car in Spain !
When you next manage to rent a hire car in Spain think of us in Crete many years ago.
This was what our car hire company thought they could offload on us.

Great effort with the cutting & pasting. I had to put paper bags over our heads individually so that meant two different operations as you can only do one at a time. Then cropping two photos to separate the one with the bag from the one without a bag. Finally trying to match up two photos to make it appear it was one.
Of course I could've just painted our faces out in my Photobucket but it wouldn't have looked as comical as the bags on our heads.

Nationwide to charge for using debit & credit cards, BUT, thankfully, NOT in Spain .. CHECK THIS OUT !!!
>>>>>>> <<<<<<<
When you use a Nationwide Visa debit card or credit card to make a transaction in certain currencies other than sterling, Visa charge a fee for each transaction and Nationwide currently pays that fee on your behalf.
We will start to pass this fee onto you from 6 May 2009 on credit card and from 1 June 2009 on debit card and it will be included in the sterling amount shown on your statement.
The fee is currently 0.84%. From 1 July 2009 this fee will increase to 1%.
The list below provides details of the countries for which Visa charge a fee. To check if you will be charged, please search for the country you are visiting by using the A-Z list. Unless stated otherwise a fee will be charged.
If you have any other questions regarding these charges, please talk to an advisor at one of our branches.
Questions & Answers (Links below won't work for some strange reason , go to Nationwide site via the CLICK ME picture above to read all there is)
Will I be charged the Visa fee for withdrawing cash from a cash machine?
Will I be charged the Visa fee if I buy things from foreign websites?
I have a FlexAccount with a cash card that I use to withdraw cash when I'm on holiday. Will I be charged?
If you click on 'S' in the A - Z list you'll see ..........
Spain - No fee charged

Euro-MPs attack Spanish laws affecting expat homeowners
SEEN HERE
Members of the European Parliament launched a new offensive against notorious Spanish land laws that continue to wreck the holiday-home dreams of Britons in the Valencia region.
The European Parliament’s campaigning Petitions Committee approved a damning new report slamming planning loopholes which leave homeowners defenceless against developers seizing part or all of their property.
Thousands of properties in Spain have been demolished without compensation for their owners - many of whom are British expatriates. In some cases, the authorities have even charged the property owners for the installation of local services, even after they have lost their property.
About 15,000 foreign residents, mainly British, Belgian, German and French property owners, lodged a formal petition with MEPs three years ago to protest against a 1994 Valencia land and town planning law which triggered 20,000 compulsory purchases of land or property for “urban” development.
The original aim of the law was to ensure community development plans were not blocked by individual land-owners - a loophole meant unscrupulous developers could reclassify rural land as urban without the owners’ permission - effectively giving developers compulsory purchase rights on foreign-owned homes at a fraction of the market value.
The European Court of Justice has already ruled that the so-called “land-grab” law is illegal, but the European Commission says a replacement law - the Ley Urbanistica Valenciana - still breaches EU public procurement regulations and therefore failed to protect citizens’ rights.
Now the Petitions Committee - which has no direct power - has made a new call on the Madrid government to force revision of the regional law.
A replacement law - the Ley Urbanistica Valenciana - still breached EU public procurement regulations and therefore failed to protect citizens’ rights.
Sir Robert Atkins, a Tory MEP, said: “The scandalous behaviour of some developers, builders and local authorities resulting in people losing their homes has to stop now. The emotional and financial trauma suffered by so many legitimate home owners has to be rectified.
“The European Parliament has expressed a forceful condemnation of Spanish Land Law and its implementation and it is imperative that all political parties in Spain understand the anger of residents and act to change the law as soon as possible.”
His colleague Roger Helmer, also a Tory MEP, said: “The Petitions Committee has no power, but as it acts directly on citizens’ petitions for help, endorsement from the Committee adds hugely to the pressure on the European Commission to keep pursuing the issue”.
He said MEPs were now looking at ways of providing compensation for those who have already lost their homes or lost part of their land because of the law.

Wealth tax HAS been abolished for non residents, according to THIS ! You should submit form 210 rather than the 214 & submit no later than 30th June, 2009 for 2008 (6 months earlier than before).
No questions for me please, refer to your fiscal or lawyer.
Seen in another forum, email just sent to member by his lawyer.
CHANGES IN WEALTH TAX LAW
MESSAGE ONLY FOR CLIENTS WITH A PROPERTY IN SPAIN PURCHASED PRIOR TO 31-12-2008.
Over the course of this year, we have received numerous queries from our clients asking about the abolition of Wealth Tax (Impuesto del Patrimonio) in Spain. We promised to send further information to everyone as soon as this law was published.
This year, the Spanish government indeed studied the possibility of withdrawing its Wealth Tax. Subsequently and by means of Law 4/2008 of December 23, published in the OSG of 25/12/2008, the Spanish Wealth Tax was finally abolished.
Until now, non-residents have been required to present the Form 214, the so-called "wealth tax return". The official name of this Form 214 is "Impuesto sobre el Patrimonio y sobre la Renta de No Residentes" ("Wealth and Income Tax Return for Non-Residents").
As its name suggests, this form was used to tax non-residents in regards to Wealth Tax and Income Tax. The form itself is divided into two clearly separate sections.
Following approval of this law, those non-resident individuals who have one or more properties in Spain are no longer required to pay Wealth Tax. However, they are still required to pay the Income Tax for Non-Residents.
Therefore, the publication of this law means the following for non-residents with property in Spain:
1) They are no longer required to present Form 214 as of 01 January 2009.
2) They are required to present a new form: Form 210 regarding Income Tax for Non-Residents.
3) A reduction to taxes due: the amount to be paid to the Spanish Tax Authorities (Hacienda) by means of the new form will be less than the amount resulting from the previous Form 214 given that only the Income Tax for Non-Residents is now applicable and the Wealth Tax has been abolished.
4) Deadlines for presentation: the period for filing this tax return runs from 01 January to 30 June of the following year . In other words, the deadline for paying taxes corresponding to 2008 is 30 June 2009 (6 months prior to the previously applicable deadline).

Income tax for non-residents who do not rent out their property (standard declaration)
Spanish name: Impuesto de la renta de no residentes, declaración ordinaria (IRNR)
Description: You pay this version of income tax in Spain if the following conditions apply: 1) You do not reside in Spain, 2) You own property in Spain, 3) The property is exclusively for personal use and you do not rent it out, 4) You have no other source of taxable income in Spain. Although you do not earn an income from the property, in the eyes of the Spanish tax authorities you still derive a benefit from owning a property in Spain and therefore have to pay an imputed income tax.
Tax base and rate: Tax base: 2% of the cadastral value of the property (found on the IBI receipt), or 1.1% if the cadastral value has been revised since 1st January 1994. Tax rate: 24% (25% for 2006 and before)
Form: Use general section 210-A and indicating income type 02.
Dates: Presented before the 30th June each year. For example you have from 1st January to 30th June to declare tax on income during previous year.
Example: Cadastral value of property = 200,000 Euros. Base = 2,200 Euros. Tax = 24% x 2,200 Euros = 528 Euros

The Valencian Government has (apparently) passed a new decree to the effect that it is now obligatory for all owners of apartments or homes that they rent out to belong to a central register.
Taken from VALENCIA LIFE today It's currently undergoing maintenance & you do need to subscribe to it .(I have no further news).
The Valencian Government has passed a new decree to the effect that it is now obligatory for all owners of apartments or homes that they rent out to belong to a central register. The only sort of activity exempt from registering will be the Aparthotels as they offer 24 hour services. Tourism Consellera Angelica Such stated that the creation of the Register was aimed at calming the atmosphere down in the tourist sector over the non-registered offering of apartments to let for a holiday over the Internet, which has been of considerable concern.
