Villafranqueza hosts the Moors and Christians festival 16-19th March each year and it is held in different areas of Alicante at other times. This is one of the most traditional festivals in this part of Spain, celebrating the expulsion of the Moors from the region in the 12th and 13th Century. The festival is a mixture of religion, history and street carnival. The costumes are generally handmade by the locals.
