Tarifa is renowned as a surfers paradise. It has ten km of white sandy beaches, unspoilt countryside and some of the best windsurfing conditions in europe. It sits at the point where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean. You can see the Rif Mountains of Africa from here, merely 11 km across the Straits of Gibraltar. It is not a place for sun worshippers as the wind can be very strong and beginner surfers may find it difficult. This little fishing town was where the moors invaded Southern Spain in AD 711.
